FINE ART
ELIZABETH WATSON
Elizabeth is a published illustrator and in 2025 moved into the space of being a full time professional artist. Since taking this step, she has curated, and her work been a part of an Art and Design Show along side artists: Ed Suter, Kyle Jardine and Careisha Esperanza as well as textile design from Hannah Claire Creations and pottery from Potterswork.
“I curated this show to celebrate colour, pattern and culture- the diversity and beauty of our land. It was too, a celebration of myself as an artist, taking that ‘brave’ step into the art world as a full time career. I could not have found more wonderful artists and designers to have been a part of my first curated show and indeed the very first public display of my own work. This was a very soft landing and a truly beautiful experience, one I will most definitely repeat. I chose Glenhof Manor as the ‘gallery’ as I wanted the building itself to be a big component of the show. Many people had walked straight past this beautiful heritage building in Newlands, not realising what lay behind the large white wall and black solid gates- I thought it the perfect space and backdrop that would do nothing less than emphasize the incredible beauty we are surrounded by.”
This past year Elizabeth has taken part in several group exhibitions and shows, including: First Thursday at Grand Daddy, Kirstenbosch Whispers of Autumn and Decorex ( through Kunye Art Foundation)
Her work also includes drawing and sculpture. She captures mainly female figures and portraits, as well as elements from nature. She is interested in portraying the soft lines of the female form, while capturing their inner strength, as well as our connection to each other and nature. Elizabeth has more recently also begun experimenting with plant and vegetable pigments in her figurative pieces as well as botanicals.
“What began as a watercolour commission for a client’s website, has turned into an absolute love affair with creating botanical illustrations. The client wanted watercolours but for my own work now, I wanted to go natural and push the naturally found pigments as far as I could. Although the colours are somewhat confined- they also create this beautiful earthy look that seems to be perfectly suited to the subject matter- they seem almost old worldly.”
“Creating takes me out of the confines of the world, where anything is possible- creating a way through and out of all challenges. Art is for me, the most powerful form of hope there is, after God”
